Beauty Interview with Lea Michele

70th Annual Golden Globe Awards

Getting to Know Lea Michele

Many of us choose old Hollywood stars as our favourite beauty icons and inspirational figures; it’s easy to see why with their obvious femininity, impeccable style and sex appeal. So why do woman in this day and age, choose to look the complete opposite to their favourite icons?

Long hair extensions that come in an array of colours, eyelashes that go on for miles; embellished with feathers, papers, glitters and diamante’s, nails that are decorated and embellished to an inch of their lives and that familiar orange tinge to the skin, this is how young girls are choosing to style themselves?  Maybe if the media placed more importance on actual unique beauty, rather than beauty that you can stick or glue on then this perception would change.

I like many others would also choose old Hollywood starlets as my all-time style icons and inspirational figures. Audrey Hepburn, GraceKelly, Lillian Gish, Hedy Lamarr, Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth are all at the top of my list. They are all beautiful and unique in appearance and personality, yet each of them oozes this inner beauty that you simply cannot fault. They each dressed well and held themselves with such sophistication that I feel some form of loss, that ladies of this day and age don’t feel it’s worth emulating.
While I adore old Hollywood stars, it is worth noting that some celebrities break the typical noughties beauty mould and bring some of that old Hollywood elegance into 2013. It’s for this reason that I adore Lea Michele’s style, beauty and contagious happiness.

For those who don’t know who Lea Michele is, she is one of the main stars of the hit TV show Glee playing the character Rachel Berry. Although Glee has become a huge hit across each side of the big pond, Lea Michele is actually a child star who adores musical theatre with such passion that it’s you can’t fail not to notice. I kindly asked Lea if she would mind answering a few questions, so we can find out how she attains her sartorial elegance, beauty and optimism.

Thank you Lea for taking the time to answer these questions firstly.

♥ Your skin always looks amazing and I love how you completely transform your daytime and night time looks, what products would we currently find in your make-up bag?
First of all, thank you for the compliment. My main preference is to wear none at all, I'm the type of girl who washes her face any chance she gets and that definitely helps a lot! Natural skin is beautiful and healthy, so letting my skin breathe is really important for me and I use my Clarisonic every day. Normally outside of work I don't wear much makeup, sometimes just lip gloss or even no make up.

However, when I’m really gutsy, or for work, in my makeup bag you'd find L'Oreal voluminous mascara, along with L'Oreal blush ( MagicSmooth SoufflĂ© ), Giorgio Armani foundation, L’Oreal Paris Le Kohl Pencil, and L'Oreal eye shadow. I know that's a lot of L'Oreal, I'm not only a sponsor, but also a fan of their products. For my hair, I love L'Oreal and Kerastase.

♥ I loved your part in New Year’s Eve; will you be doing any more movie roles in 2013-2014?
Next year I do have a movie coming out, except it's only a voice over part. I am the voice of Dorothy in "Dorothy of Oz" So I’m pretty excited about that!! I've also recently been working on an album which is taking up most of my time away from Glee.

You have an amazing figure Lea, what do you do to maintain it?
I'm a vegan, so a strict diet helps a little bit. I've recently purchased a juicer to get some really good nutrients, and I also drink protein shakes which really help to slim down. We also set goals for ourselves at work and try to stick to it!

♥ What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
When I’m not working, I LOVE relaxing by the pool in my back yard or going traveling. Recently Cory and I have taken loads of trips to BigBear Mountain, located in southern California where I’ve learned a bit about snowboarding. I have to say my favourite place to go back to is home in New York, where I am right now!!! Last night we went to go see the Broadway musical "Once", so I was in heaven!

♥ You are a style icon; personally I loved your Vivienne Tam gown and your Valentino gown at the SAG awards. Have you ever had a fashion disaster? If so can you describe it?
Several I'll list a few. At the American Horror Story Asylum premier, my dress had ripped while in the car. There was a tiny hole which was bothering me all night. Not much of a 'disaster', but definitely a problem.

Last year at the golden globes, I wore a Marchesa dress and it wasn't even the one I ordered!!!! The one I ordered was custom made and far from the design of that one, but I had to wear it because there was no time to make an exchange or choose another, so I tried to pull it off and ended up falling in love with it.

A few months ago, I had gotten a spray tan and was holding a little puppy and it peed on me!!! So my legs had pee spots all over them. It was terrible.

♥ Who are your style icons?
I love Sophia Loren, Barbra Streisand, Natalie Wood, and Raquel Welch. They're all different looking, beautiful woman and that's important to me.

♥ What inspires you?
I could go on and on and on about all the different things that inspire me. It's always been Broadway, Barbara and family throughout my whole life and I have of course now added my fans to my list. They believe in me so much and are so sweet and supportive, it's absolutely incredible. Broadway was always a goal I wanted to achieve and finally did achieve when I turned 7 years old.

Barbara Streisand was mainly the reason for that and she has helped me in many ways, she taught me that the way to live your life is to believe I’m beautiful and in no need of change. My family has always been supportive of me and that will never go away and recently Cory (Cory Monteith who plays Finn Hudson in Glee) has also made a huge impact on all of my choices. He inspires me, motivates me to basically take risks and not take the easy way out. He keeps me going and he keeps me happy.

♥ Who would you choose to play Lea Michele in a film based on your life?
In a movie about me, I honestly don't know. I have never actually thought about a movie about myself that sounds so surreal.

♥ How would you describe yourself in one sentence?
I don't want to say something like 'talented' or 'beautiful' because actually, I’m not. I'd describe myself as being average as that’s all I am. I'm no different from you, your children, mother, aunt, uncle, cousin or friend.  I’m just me, a girl from New York that's still a person just like everyone else and I enjoy being just like everyone else.

♥ Do you ever feel self-conscious, and how do you handle the constant scrutiny that is placed on beauty and looks in the media?
Sure I feel self- conscious, who doesn't? All the media are in my eyes are money makers. Whether it’s relating to beauty or real life they will say things just to make headlines. I used to get so worked up about people saying I couldn't pull off a certain dress or outfit, or that I put my hair up in a ponytail because it was dirty or something like that, but now I realise that the people who like it will always like it and vice versa.
Over 2 million fans probably adore it; meanwhile I’m wasting my time listening to one person who just made a few thousand dollars to type a false story. I don't stress about it anymore.

♥ What is your favourite quote?
"You have got to discover you, what you do, and trust it." - Barbara Streisand.

♥ What 3 things would you take to a desert island and why?
I would take my phone because I can't live without it, my cat (if that counts) because she's one of my best friends (yes I know, very strange ha-ha)  and definitely headphones so I could plug them into my phone and listen to music, that is until the phone dies, uh oh.

♥ What songs or artists would we find on your playlist?
Definitely the newer stuff. Rihanna’s 'stay' is one of my fave's at the moment and I happen to buy most of the glee songs just to support myself and co-workers. There’s also a ton of Broadway things. (Crazy, I know!)

♥ What is your pet peeve?
My biggest pet peeve would have to be face piercings. Not nose piercings, but lip piercings which really annoy and upset me. Not even that, a small ‘one’ is ok, but when there’s 6 on your lip and 2 in each corner or on your chin ‘UGH’.  Also tongue, eyebrows and those huge gauge things are creepy. I would have said people that chew with their mouth open, but I totally do that so I can't judge.

♥ How would Cory describe you in 3 words?
Cory said "Dedicated, Beautiful, and Sincere"

Thank you Lea.

What because apparent during the interview is that Lea definitely is just like you and me, the fame and celebrity status certainly hasn’t gone to her head in any way and she is so friendly that you forget she is on a hit TV show.

I believe it’s her down to earth personality, secure relationships with her fans, family and Cory as well as her positive attitude that makes her shine miles above the rest. I adore her style and her current sartorial love affair with Valentino and Marchesa only make her style more covetable. Lea knows what suits her, she knows what she likes and she sticks to it, you never see her in the worst dressed lists as her overall look gives a big nod to the old Hollywood style that you cannot, not like it.

It’s refreshing to see someone in the limelight that, just like me and you can be insecure.  She happily  admits that she is not flawless and doesn’t try to glaze over the fact that she has also had ‘oops’ moments, such as the hole in her dress or the moment the puppy streaked her tan.

Yes she has a career that we can only dream off but that is what Lea did, she dreamed, she believed and she achieved her dreams of working in musical theatre and now on Glee.  I am excited to see where the next few years take Lea in both her TV work and in her fashion journey.

I just want to close this interview by thanking Lea Michele again for being so kind and just to say to all you guys reading and Lea ‘don’t ever change , your perfect just as you are’.
