Let’s face it, of all the problems and issues in the world, protecting the environment should be our biggest concern. The environment is all we have, it is the big beautiful nut that encapsulates everything else including politics, economics, education and everything else. Basically, if we don’t do our bit to protect the environment then there will be nothing else anyway. It’s a thinker, but one worth thinking about. That’s why you should start doing everything you can to make your home more green, and we don’t mean painting it.
Luckily, there are loads of things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint and reduce your home's negative impact on the world. You don’t even need to worry about affecting the style of your home, because these are just the little things that make a big difference. And because there is no time to waste, we’re going to go through some of them right now:
We’ve Seen the Light - by replacing your old incandescent light bulbs with new energy efficient ones (or as they are officially called compact fluorescent bulbs) you will save a whopping 65% more energy.
Turn Off The TV - you probably know that your television is left on standby a lot. What you probably don’t know is that your television is on standby an average of 17 hours a day. You may be thinking, “go me, I’m not such a screen-addict as I thought I was.” But what you should be thinking is, “turn off the television at the plug.” Seriously, it is such an easy way to save electricity.
No Love For Leaks - leaky taps are so annoying. Drip, drip, drip. But what’s even more annoying is that one drip accounts for over 180 litres of wasted water over the course of a single week. A week. That’s all. Then there is the leaky loo issue. These have been known to waste a lot of water at a rate of 700 litres a day, depending on how bad the leak is obviously. But still. Even half-bad is a big waste.
The Power Of Nature - why not harness all that incredible power that the earth loves to give away at a financial cost of nothing? You know, chuck a few solar panels on your roof, and a wind turbine in your garden, and a rain collector somewhere. All this amazing energy is going to waste and it doesn’t have to.
Respect the Fridge - this is one of the simplest and yet most unused ways to save on your energy bills and save the world; move your fridge into the shade. You see, if your fridge is soaking up the sun like a British holidaymaker then you are forcing your fridge to work extra hard in order to stay extra cool. So move it to the shade and help out a bit.
Brilliant Bamboo - you may have thought sunflowers or asparagus were the fastest growing plants on earth, but you’d be wrong. That title belongs to bamboo. It grows super fast. What’s more, it’s super-duper replenishment rates mean it is way better for the environment than timber. What are we talking about? Your flooring of course. Food for thought, that’s all.
Way To Go, Wool - your bedroom, you love it, right? You love snuggling up in your synthetic duvet and getting all cozy. Well, the earth hates you for it. However, you can make the earth love you by simply getting a wool blanket instead. Why? Well, it is a lot more eco-friendly to produce, that’s why.
