Large-scale home repairs are one of the biggest causes of financial trouble because they come out of nowhere and you can’t just ignore them. At least, half of that is true. You can’t ignore them, but they don’t come out of nowhere. There are always warning signs in those small repairs that you’ve been putting off. If you neglect those smaller fixes, they’ll soon turn into big problems and you risk letting your house fall into disrepair. When you get hit with the bill for those major repairs, you’ll wish that you hadn’t put off all of those smaller, and much cheaper repairs beforehand. To avoid any disasters, make these small changes today.
Damp
Damp and mould is a big problem because it’s bad for your health and it can cause a lot of wider damage in the home. It often gets overlooked though because it starts out with just a few little spots. But before you know it, you’ll have a whole wall covered in mould and damp and you’ll have to get somebody in to fix it up which is going to cost you. As soon as you notice any small patches, clean them off right away. You’ll have to work out what the cause of the damp is and sort that as well. If you’re lucky, it might just be bad air circulation, especially in bathrooms. Otherwise, you might have a bigger issue on your hands like a leaking roof. You can go a long way to stopping the problem by using damp and mould proof paints on the walls in the affected rooms.
Change The Locks
Most of us don’t bother changing the locks when we move into a new place but if they’re old and outdated, you’re at risk of burglary. Professional criminals know how to spot the tell-tale signs of an old lock and they’ll target houses that have them. Get somebody like SJO Locksmith to fit some more up to date ones that aren’t so easy to break open. It’ll reduce your home insurance bills and make it more attractive to buyers if you ever decide to sell up.
Reseal The Bathroom
The waterproof sealant around the bathroom starts to come away after a while. If you leave it until it’s all come away then water will start to leak through and you’ll end up with much bigger problems. There’s no need to leave it until it gets worse, it’ll only cost you a few quid for a tube of sealant and it’s easy to do yourself. That’s a far better option than getting somebody in to fix all of the wet rot that’s caused by big leaks.
Fixing Windows
Wooden windows are a great feature that adds value to a home but they need a lot more care and attention than PVC windows. Over time, the wood will start to chip away and the sealant around the edges will crumble. If they get too bad then you’ll end up having to replace the whole thing. But you can fill those small holes and gaps as they come up, it’s cheap and you can do it in five minutes.
Making these small repairs now is going to save you a lot of time and money in the future.
